Bike Buying

How to Buy a Bike based on Usage(Gears,Wheels,Handlebars)
Only what i think you need

(attn:thisisonlyfornonfixie-fanatics)

I shall only list the most common scenarios.

1.City Commuting.
2.City Commuting+Weekend Long Rides.
3.Long Rides(Credit Card Touring)
4.Long Rides(Fully Loaded Touring)

(This is for those who don't mind using derailleurs)

1.City Commuting-

  • For a city commute, gears are unnecessary,so its better to stay with a single speed.Gears for a basic city commute is the car equivalent of the rich alpha male wannabes who go around in SUVs in the city.
  • You don't need dropped handlebars.A straight handlebar is more than enough. No need to look 'cool' child.
  • Get any set of thin tires. You don't need MTB tires here unless you plan to ride the footpath and harass old men.
2.City Commuting+Weekend Long Rides

  • Gears would be required in this case. But you can ride without them if you don't mind the pain.
  • You can get dropped bars or the Bar Ends depending on the type of riding you do.Get Dropped bars if you want to ride at a fast pace, get bar ends if you want to ride around with a can of beer instead of electral.
  • You can select the tires based on the terrain.A thin set would be enough unless you want to ride fast over the bad sections of the road.
3.Long Rides(Credit Card Touring)

  • Get a good geared Road Bike/Hybrid with a big chainring in the front.
  • Dropped Bars.
  • The usual 700cx25 or so would be sufficient.(Thin tires again).
4.Long Rides(Fully Loaded Touring)

  • A dedicated tourer is very costly.Go for it if you can.Otherwise, you can get an MTB/Hybrid and convert it into a tourer. You'll need the granny in front since youll be carrying extra baggage.
  • I would prefer Butterfly Bars since they offer a lot of relaxed hand positions.
  • Better to go for thick 700c tires here.Around 700cx37-42 or so.
